Admissions and Parking
Auckland Castle will close to daily visits following Fri 30 September 2016 for major restoration and redevelopment work.
The Library Tea Room will remain open daily until Sun 20 November 2016, and then for special events throughout December.
St Peter’s Chapel will remain open every weekend until Sun 18 December 2016.
The park will remain open as usual from 6am to dusk.

Travelling to Auckland Castle by car
If you are planning to travel to Auckland Castle by car here are some estimated travel distances which may help you plan your day.
We are located approximately 12 miles from Durham, 13 miles from Darlington, 25 miles from Middlesbrough and 30 miles from Newcastle-upon-Tyne. From the A1 motorway take the A688 from Durham Services (J61) to Bishop Auckland.
There is no parking on site to preserve the historic landscape with its picturesque views. Please follow signs to North Bondgate car park, just 300 yards from the Castle gates. The terrain is flat and you will be able to enjoy some of the town as you make your way to Auckland Castle. There is now a free shuttle minibus service for those with mobility issues.
Due to works being carried out by Durham County Council there is currently no access to North Bondgate Car Park through the Market Place. Please follow the diversion signs to the car park of follow Sat Nav postcode DL14 7PG. Once you have parked, turn left out of the car park, walk straight ahead until you come to the Town Hall. Continue past the Town Hall on the right-hand side of the building until you see the Robinson Arch which is the main entrance to the Castle. If you don’t want to walk you could wait for our free shuttle bus (See below for details).
Free Shuttle Service
A new free ‘car to castle’ shuttle service makes it easier for visitors with mobility issues to visit Auckland Castle. The shuttle minibus runs from a special stop within the North Bondgate car park (see map) to Auckland Castle’s visitor reception. The bus is accessible to wheelchairs.
After Fri 30 September, the Shuttle Bus will operate daily until Sun 20 November and then for special events taking placce in the Library Tea Room or St Peter’s Chapel.
