Step Back in Time at Auckland Castle this Autumn

14 August 2017

Whether it’s trying your hand at a centuries-old craft, learning about life mining underground or marvelling at the Gothic splendour of a 900-year-old castle, there are countless ways to weave your own magic in Bishop Auckland this autumn.

The Craft Skills Festival, a celebration of heritage building and traditional crafts, will take place at Auckland Castle, on Saturday, September 16 and Sunday, September 17.

Visitors can try a variety of traditional crafts including weaving, pottery and stone carving, with a range of tailored children’s activities also running throughout the weekend.

Auckland Castle is due to re-open to the public in May 2018 but a special Heritage Open Days event on Saturday, September 9 and Sunday, September 10 will give visitors the chance to take sneak peek inside the Castle and St Peter’s Chapel, handle objects from the collection and chat to experts about the building’s restoration.

And at the North East’s new Mining Art Gallery  visitors can explore the stories behind the art on a family trail and learn more about the paintings and artists in free curator-led tours.

These events form part of a busy autumn season in Bishop Auckland and at Auckland Castle, with other highlights including  floral-themed events, family friendly arts and crafts and the return of Daisy Arts’ popular All Hallows Walk.
