Runners Race Through History at Auckland Castle

Hundreds of runners made their way through Medieval woodlands and past Roman ruins to complete one of the region’s most picturesque races.

Competitors of all ages gathered at the start line in Bishop Auckland for the third annual Auckland Castle Trail Race and Fun Run in partnership with Auckland Castle Trust and Shildon Running and Athletics Club.

More than 260 runners completed the five-mile multi-terrain Trail Race course through the Castle grounds.

The Fun Run, open to under-16s of all abilities, took runners on a more gentle course and it was all smiles from more than 90 young entrants and their families as they prepared to tackle the two-mile route through the Castle’s deer park.

Both the Trail Race and Fun Run took runners along a unique route, through the Robinson Arch and into the grounds of Auckland Castle  where they passed by the 900-year-old castle and 17th Century Walled Garden.

The Trail Race and Fun Run are part of a programme of events taking place whilst Auckland Castle is closed for extensive restoration work.
