Auckland Castle Reaches Volunteer Milestone
31 May 2016
Teenager Savannah Robinson has become the 200th active volunteer to be signed-up since the Auckland Castle Trust took over the running of the palace.
Savannah joined the already 85-strong team of room stewards who offer a warm welcome to Auckland Castle, and play a vital role in helping bring the building and its centuries of history to life for the thousands of visitors who pass through every year.
The 16 year old has been inspired to become the latest member of the rapidly expanding volunteer team after participating in the unique Heritage Hunters project, which sees young people putting an alternative spin on the castle’s past to encourage their peers to connect with its history.
Savannah, who lives in Bishop Auckland and is currently studying health and social care at the town’s college, said after 18 months working with the Heritage Hunters where she had learnt some ‘amazing facts about the castle’, she felt it was time to give something back.
She said, “The castle is an incredible place and I now know so much about it thanks to Heritage Hunters. I have learnt too much about the castle now to just let it go, and volunteering offers me the opportunity to pass what I know on to visitors and hopefully enhance their experience.”
