Zurbaran installation The Frick Collection Zurbarans at The Frick Collection

New York Exhibitions

The Auckland Project has two exhibitions in New York in the early part of 2018, as the Zurbarán paintings continue their journey across the USA.

Current Exhibitions: THE FRICK COLLECTION

While Auckland Castle is closed for conservation works, the Zurbarán paintings are on display in the USA.

After being exhibited at the Meadows Museum, Dallas, the Zurbaráns are currently on display at The Frick Collection in New York.

They will return to Auckland Castle later this year, ahead of its re-opening on 1 December.

As part of their tour of the USA, the paintings spent several months at the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, where they were studied in-depth by a team of experts who made a number of discoveries about Zurbarán’s artistic technique.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Jonathan Ruffer and Philippe de Montebello discuss the history of the Zurbarán paintings, as well as‎ the establishment of the Spanish Gallery and Research Centre in collaboration with Durham University. You can view the discussion here

Exhibition: 31 January – 22 April 2018

Sotheby’s in New York recently hosted a jointly curated exhibition of outstanding Spanish Old Master paintings acquired as part of our permanent collection.

The paintings in this exhibition are a small but significant part of the new Spanish Gallery, which will open in 2019 in Bishop Auckland Market Place, forming the UK’s largest collection of Spanish art outside London.

The idea for the gallery was inspired by the collection of paintings Jacob and His Twelve Sons by Francisco de Zurbarán, which have been at Auckland Castle since 1756. The Spanish Gallery will showcase a range of exciting works of Spanish and Latin American art, providing context to Zurbarán’s paintings.

A slideshow of images from the exhibition is available to view online.
