Accessibility

For the vast majority of our visitors, Auckland Castle and its grounds are fully accessible.

Parking is located at North Bondgate car park in the heart of Bishop Auckland town and a five-minute walk from the castle. The route from the car park to the castle is flat and well maintained. For those who are unable to walk or who have small children there is a shuttle bus service between the car park and castle, which departs every 15 minutes. The collection point for the shuttle bus is within the car park. However this only runs on event days now.

Until the castle is restored and redeveloped, there will be a small number of areas that may be harder to access for those who are less mobile. We would not want you to arrive at Auckland Castle only to be disappointed with your experience, and we therefore advise anyone who is concerned that they might have accessibility problems to contact us in advance of your visit.

Our main garden areas are flat and the deer park has a gravelled access via the castle driveway. The park itself has undulating topography, but nothing that is too hilly or challenging.

The latest Disabled Go report for access to the castle is now available at disabledgo.com/access-guide/durham-county-council/auckland-castle#AccessGuide.

Please note disabled parking is no longer available on site at Auckland Castle. The next Disabled Go report will be updated with this information.
